Cheery thought for the day. [Apr. 19th, 2007|11:33 pm]
I sometimes take great comfort in the fact that no one I know has yet put a bullet it my brain. This means the either I'm doing something right, or I'm not worth the price of a bullet.

Every death and advanced math [Apr. 9th, 2007|06:06 pm]
While I feel that it's true that each man (or woman's) death diminishes me, some of then diminish me by negative amounts.

If you light a man a fire, he will be warm for a day.
If you light a man ON fire, he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Rember, God never give you any more than it takes to crush all your hopes and dreams and leave you a quivering mass crying under the bed.

I have obtained the rank of ubergeek since my name was used as an adverb yesterday. (And if it wasn’t used as an adverb, I’m sure Honor will correct me) Apparently I “went all Dan on the scripts”. This means I took a mess of poorly written scripts that take days to configure and run successfully and rewrote them in the “arcane programming language of Perl” so that the user can enter in a few necessary field, then the scripts run and generate the hundreds of pages of output automagically.

Personally, I don’t know what scares me more. The fact that my cow-orkers consider Perl an arcance language or the fact I’ve had done this so many times, they can now use my name as an adverb. Mind you I work at a nuclear power plant, which aren’t know for being on the cutting edge of technology. I’m also still trying to impress on some of the people out there that the purpose of computers isn’t to make neat program, it’s to make life easier. Computer are supposed to do the hard repetitive grunt work, like processing a couple of hundred megs of data to generate hundreds of graphs. The humans are supposed to take those graphs and use them to make important decisions about operating the nuclear power plant. The purpose of the computer isn’t to make the average user into a programmer. More than once I’ve taken a ghod awful collection of programs and scripts that have been hacked together and break the moment something changes (like a path) and spent a week or so pounding them into a dependable program that saves a couple of man weeks of work every time they run the program. And the folks at work seem to think this is a small miracle, but they don’t get out much.

This has gone too far [Dec. 17th, 2005|08:09 am]

I just ran across this link, www.inspotla.org/tell-them,that lets people send anonymous email to people who they may have given a STD to. JESUS H FUCKING CHRIST, has the complete lack of personal responsibility in the U.S.A. gone so far away that we're now afraid to tell someone in person that you may have given them a FUCKING LIFE THREATENING DISEASE?

I know the culture of "it's someone else's fault" has been running away in this country for a while and personal responsibility is rapidly becoming a thing of the past, but this is just too fucking much. I can't think of anyone I hate enough to not tell them they have a STD. Ok, I can think of some people I'd like to see GET an STD and be there when they get the news, but that's another rant entirely.

But if you're too gutless to stand up and tell someone you may have infected them, then GET THE FUCK OFF THE PLANET, WE DON'T NEED YOU. Now I can see a few cases that you can't or won't want to talk to some one, but at that point have a friend send it, or write a personal letter. Don't send an anonymous email to the person that's likely to be deleted as spam.

I was always taught that when you screw up, you stand up and take you punishment. Don't go trying to blame someone else for you. You made the mistake, you fix it or at least take responsibility. Don't duck and hide like some 5 year old trying to avoid a spanking, but maybe that's just me.
